Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo Spreads, Death Toll Passes 2,100

The Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo has become the second largest on record, with more than 2,100 deaths and the virus spreading to a sixth province.

Health workers are struggling to contain the rapidly growing outbreak. Their efforts are being complicated by community resistance, misinformation about the disease, strikes by unpaid staff, and threats from rebel groups.

These obstacles have made it increasingly difficult for response teams to track the virus, reach affected communities, and provide medical care. The expansion into a sixth province adds to the complexity of the response.

The outbreak continues to grow, and the combination of resistance, misinformation, staff strikes, and rebel threats is severely hampering containment efforts.
