Lagos Independent Artists Finally Get a Proper Stage at Indie Nights Live

Ask a fan how their favourite act broke through and they will usually name a song. Ask the artist and they will point to a specific room. On the 2nd of August, Bature Brewery in Lagos became that room for six independent musicians.

The opening edition of Indie Nights Live, a live series made up of six monthly editions created by Afro Vibes Africa and powered by Jack Daniel’s, gave six artists one stage and an audience that had not heard of half of them before that night. By the end, the crowd had turned into the loudest advocates for all six acts.

Lil Qhid, JDess, Coblaze, Dhrey, Suurshi and Victor Collins each performed with something to prove and no label machinery behind them. The venue held attention set after set. Funmi Abimbola, Senior Brand Manager at Brown Forman Portfolio Nigeria, was in the audience and explained the brand’s perspective. “Independence isn’t a mood for us; it’s the whole brand. Jack Daniel’s has done things its own way since 1866, and that’s exactly what drew us to this room: artists who’d built an audience the same way, with no shortcuts and no permission. Giving them a stage wasn’t a hard decision; it felt obvious.”

What connected the performances was not a shared genre. It was the sound of artists who had grown their audiences through Audiomack uploads, Instagram Lives and rooms much smaller than Bature Brewery. That history came through in how they performed, like people who had finally been handed a room big enough to say what they had been saying all along.

The timing is significant. Nigerian music is enjoying its biggest global moment yet, while the industry machinery around it has become more selective. Playlists, label deals and sync placements move quickly and tend to rotate around a small number of names. New sounds keep coming from artists working on their own terms, with no A&R approval, who get discovered eventually, often long after audiences in rooms like Bature Brewery already knew them.

Indie Nights Live is built to close that gap. It is not a showcase or a talent hunt. It is a proper stage with professional production for artists who have earned an audience without being handed one. Independent music does not need more praise; it needs infrastructure. That is also why the Jack Daniel’s partnership fits naturally here: a brand that has done things its own way since 1866, choosing to support the room rather than the noise around it.

The first chapter of six has now been delivered. Indie Nights Live will run monthly through December with a fresh line up each edition. Artists playing at chapter four or five could be names you are hearing everywhere by this time next year. Chapter Two arrives on the 30th of August. The series is created and curated by @AfroVibesAfrica and @IndieNightLagos in partnership with @JackDaniels_NG. Please drink responsibly. 18+.

For independent artists in Lagos, the missing piece may have always been a room that takes them seriously. Indie Nights Live now offers a recurring space where they can perform with the production quality their music deserves.
