South Korea’s Lee proposes talks to formally end Korean War

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung proposed on Saturday that Pyongyang engage in dialogue to formally conclude the Korean War, which has technically remained unresolved for more than 70 years because no peace treaty was ever signed.

By proposing negotiations, Lee aims to move beyond the armistice that suspended hostilities and toward a permanent peace settlement. The Korean War has been in a technical state of war ever since, as the two sides stopped fighting without ever signing a treaty to officially end it. A successful dialogue would mark the first time the conflict is formally resolved.

The call for talks is a step toward addressing a war that has lingered in legal limbo for more than seven decades.
