Mora Picosa: Spicy Blackberry Margarita With a Slow Burn

Blackberries do double duty in this vibrant margarita: they provide a deep, dramatic hue and a juicy, natural sweetness. Meanwhile, the chile de árbol introduces a heat that builds gradually rather than hitting all at once. No muddler required. A vigorous shake with ice is sufficient to crush the berries and unlock the fresh mint notes.

For the rim, start by combining 1 Tbsp. kosher salt and a pinch of cayenne pepper (if using) on a small plate. Rub the rim of an old-fashioned or rocks glass with lime, then dip it into the salt mixture. Fill the glass with ice and set it aside.

In a cocktail shaker, combine 4 blackberries, 1 chile de árbol, 1 mint sprig, 2 oz. tequila reposado, 1¼ oz. Cointreau, and ¾ oz. fresh lime juice. Fill the shaker with ice, cover, and shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is very cold, about 20 seconds. Strain the cocktail through a Hawthorne strainer or a slotted spoon into the prepared glass. Garnish with 2 blackberries.

The result is a visually striking cocktail with a sweet, minty base and a slow, satisfying burn from the chile de árbol.
