Porsche Brings Back Manual Transmission for 2027 911 Carrera S

Porsche has confirmed the return of the manual transmission to its 911 lineup with a special edition 2027 Carrera S built exclusively for North America.

The new 911 Carrera S with MT Package pairs a 473 horsepower twin turbo flat six engine with a six speed manual gearbox and rear wheel drive. It marks the first time a three pedal setup has been offered in the 992.2 generation, a response to what Porsche describes as immense demand from driving purists.

While the global market increasingly favors automatic transmissions due to technological advances and crowded city driving, Porsche is going against that trend. By offering a manual gearbox specifically in the United States and Canada, the Stuttgart based automaker signals that North America remains a key stronghold for drivers who value engagement over outright acceleration.

The package builds on the minimalist approach first seen in the 388 horsepower Carrera T, but with significantly more power. The 3.0 liter twin turbo flat six sends 473 horsepower to the rear wheels, and drivers shift through a six speed manual gearbox topped with a tactile walnut crowned shifter. Although the manual is likely to produce slower zero to 60 mph times than dual clutch versions, the appeal for buyers is the visceral driving experience.

The MT Package also includes a suite of dynamic upgrades as standard. These include PASM Sport suspension, rear wheel steering, and the Sport Chrono package.

Porsche’s decision to bring back the manual gearbox for the North American market demonstrates the enduring appeal of a traditional driving experience, even as the industry moves toward electrification and automation.

With the 2027 911 Carrera S, Porsche is betting that analog driving enthusiasts still matter, offering a three pedal experience that prioritizes driver involvement above all else.
