PwC Nigeria has flagged several areas of ambiguity in the newly issued Guidelines on the Taxation of Virtual Assets by the Nigeria Revenue Service, urging taxpayers to prepare for the implementation.
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) recently issued the guidelines, which are designed to bring virtual assets into Nigeria’s tax net. In its initial review, PwC identified unspecified provisions that could create compliance challenges or unintended tax consequences for taxpayers.
The firm cautioned that these ambiguities might operate as tax traps for those subject to the rules. PwC, however, did not disclose specific examples of the problematic provisions in its immediate statement. It advised taxpayers to brace for the enforcement phase and to take proactive steps in understanding their obligations under the new framework.
As the implementation date draws nearer, individuals and businesses involved in virtual asset transactions should closely monitor updates from FIRS and seek qualified professional advice to ensure full compliance. PwC’s warning underscores the need for careful tax planning in Nigeria’s evolving digital asset space.
