California has officially opened its highways to autonomous trucks. Two companies have secured permits to test self-driving technology on public roads, and one has already begun rolling out its fleet.
Aurora Innovation and Kodiak AI, both developers of self-driving truck technology, have received approval from the California Department of Motor Vehicles to operate their autonomous vehicles on public roadways. The permits mark a significant step toward commercial deployment of driverless freight transport in the state.
Kodiak has moved quickly, announcing that it has already launched testing. The company confirmed it will start with a limited number of test trucks, concentrating its early operations around its Mountain View office. This initial phase will allow Kodiak to validate its systems in real traffic conditions before expanding further.
With permits in hand and testing underway, California becomes the latest proving ground for autonomous trucking. The coming months will reveal how these vehicles handle the complexities of public highways and whether the technology is ready for wider adoption.
